The Ethiopian Journalists Association of Canada (EJAC) was successfully inaugurated on March 14, 2026, during a special event held at the Marriott Hotel in Toronto. The historic gathering brought together Ethiopian journalists living in Canada, media professionals, community leaders, and distinguished guests to mark the official launch of the association.
The event celebrated the establishment of EJAC as a professional platform dedicated to supporting Ethiopian journalists in Canada, promoting press freedom, strengthening professional collaboration, and advocating for independent journalism both in Ethiopia and within the diaspora.
Among the distinguished guests who attended and addressed the gathering were Ira Wells, President of PEN Canada, and Rachel Pulfer, President of Journalists for Human Rights. Their remarks highlighted the importance of protecting freedom of expression and supporting journalists who face repression around the world.
Also in attendance was Peter Donolo, who joined the event in solidarity with Ethiopian journalists and their efforts to strengthen professional cooperation and independent journalism in exile.
In the opening remarks, organizers emphasized that many Ethiopian journalists have been forced to leave their country due to imprisonment, intimidation, censorship, and other pressures on independent media. The establishment of EJAC reflects the determination of journalists in exile to continue their professional mission and contribute to democratic dialogue, accountability, and the protection of journalistic values.
Speakers stressed that the association will work to build professional networks, provide support for Ethiopian journalists in Canada, and engage with Canadian institutions and international partners to advance media freedom and professional standards.
The inauguration concluded with the introduction of the association’s founding board members and a call for Ethiopian journalists across Canada to join the organization and contribute to building a strong and independent professional community.
The launch of EJAC marks an important milestone for Ethiopian journalists in Canada and signals a renewed commitment to uphold the principles of ethical journalism, freedom of expression, and professional solidarity.
