Presented by Friends of Sankofa, the highly anticipated event will take place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience a two-hour segment of Gerima’s forthcoming documentary series before its official release.

Widely regarded as one of the most influential voices in independent world cinema, Gerima has built an international reputation for fearless storytelling rooted in history, identity, resistance, and liberation. With Black Lions – Roman Wolves, the veteran filmmaker once again turns his lens toward questions of memory, culture, and the enduring struggles that shape the global Black experience.

The Toronto presentation is expected to draw film enthusiasts, scholars, artists, and members of African and diaspora communities eager to witness what organizers are calling “a landmark cinematic event.” Beyond the screening itself, attendees will also participate in an intimate live Q&A session with Gerima, providing rare insight into the filmmaker’s creative process, political vision, and the historical themes embedded within the project.

“This is more than a film screening — it is a cultural and cinematic event that celebrates storytelling, history, and artistic courage on a global stage,” organizers said in a statement announcing the event.

For Toronto’s arts scene, the screening represents a significant moment. Gerima’s work has long occupied a vital place within global independent cinema, with films that challenge dominant historical narratives while centering African and diasporic voices. His appearance in Toronto is expected to resonate strongly within the city’s multicultural creative communities, particularly amid growing interest in African cinema and socially engaged documentary storytelling.

Doors for the event will open at 3:00 p.m., with programming scheduled to begin at 3:45 p.m. Organizers say seating will be limited due to anticipated demand and are encouraging guests to arrive early.
