The Ethiopian Media Authority has announced the cancellation of Addis Standard’s Internet registration certificate, effective February 17, 2018.

In a press release issued moments ago, the Authority stated that the decision follows what it described as repeated violations by Addis Standard of media ethics, Ethiopian laws, and actions deemed contrary to the national interests of the country and its people.

According to the statement, the regulator’s monitoring activities confirmed what it characterized as a “dangerous practice,” noting that the outlet had been the subject of numerous public complaints and regulatory scrutiny. The Authority said it had conducted investigations into the matter and had issued multiple advisories urging Addis Standard to correct its conduct and align its operations with professional standards and national interests.

Despite what the regulator described as repeated reminders and warnings, the outlet allegedly failed to take corrective measures.

As a result, citing provisions under the Media Proclamation, the Ethiopian Media Authority has revoked Addis Standard’s registration certificate effective immediately. The Authority further informed all stakeholders that, as of February 17, 2018, Addis Standard no longer holds a valid media license or official recognition to operate.
