Eastern Canada Diocese Reports Condemnation of Killings of Orthodox Christians in Arsi Zone
TORONTO, CANADA —The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church’s Eastern Canada Diocese has reported on the condemnation by the Holy Synod of the killings of innocent Orthodox Christians in Arsi Zone, Oromia Region, Ethiopia.
According to a letter issued by the Eastern Canada Diocese Secretariat on October 27, 2026, the killings took place on Tikimt 10 and 14, 2019 E.C. The letter states that the Holy Synod received a report on the incidents with deep sorrow and condemned the acts.
The document describes the killings as inhumane acts that violate religious freedom and the right to life, and states that such acts are unacceptable from both religious and human rights perspectives.
According to the letter, the Holy Synod called on the government to urgently investigate the incidents, bring those responsible to justice, and uphold the rule of law. It also urged the government to fulfill its responsibility to protect survivors and prevent further killings.
The Holy Synod further instructed churches in Ethiopia and around the world to hold memorial prayers and prayers of supplication for the Orthodox Christians who were killed.
In accordance with this instruction, the Eastern Canada Diocese called on the clergy and faithful under its jurisdiction to conduct memorial services and prayers for the victims.
