Doly Begum has been elected as the new Liberal Member of Parliament for Scarborough Southwest.
Begum, who has served the community for several years as a local advocate, will now represent the riding as part of the Liberal caucus in Parliament. Her work has focused on addressing community needs and supporting residents across Scarborough Southwest.
The election result marks a transition from community-level advocacy to federal representation. Begum is expected to continue her work on issues affecting constituents in her new role.
Her candidacy drew national attention earlier this year after she announced her departure from the Ontario New Democratic Party to run federally as a Liberal in the seat vacated by Bill Blair. Interim federal NDP Leader Don Davies criticized the move, accusing Begum of undermining democratic values and calling on her to explain her shift away from the progressive policies she previously supported.
She will join the Liberal team in Parliament as the newly elected representative for the riding.
