A tense scene unfolded Saturday night at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner when gunfire triggered an immediate evacuation of President Donald Trump and hundreds of attendees.

Speaking afterward from the White House, Trump confirmed that a suspected gunman had been quickly neutralized by United States Secret Service agents. He credited their rapid response, noting that one agent was struck at close range but survived thanks to a ballistic vest.

“I heard a noise and thought it was a tray,” Trump said. “But it was a gun.”

Authorities say the suspect, believed to be from California, was taken alive and transported to Howard University Hospital for treatment.

The shooting occurred near a security screening area inside the Washington Hilton, where the high-profile event was being held. Witnesses described a sudden eruption of gunshots, sending guests diving under tables as armed officers rushed in to secure the room.

Despite the chaos, Trump initially urged that the event continue, posting online that the show should go on. However, attendees were ultimately instructed to leave the venue.

During remarks later, Trump pointed to the incident as evidence supporting his proposal for a new, more secure White House ballroom—one he claims would feature advanced protections such as bulletproof glass and drone resistance.

This marked Trump’s first appearance at the correspondents’ dinner in over a decade, adding an unexpected and dramatic turn to the high-profile gathering.
