Israel on Friday announced its formal recognition of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state, marking a historic diplomatic breakthrough and making Israel the first country to officially extend such recognition.

In a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, the Israeli government confirmed that it has also signed an agreement to establish full diplomatic relations with Somaliland.

“The prime minister announced today the official recognition of the Republic of Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state,” the statement said, adding that the move aligns with the spirit of the Abraham Accords, the normalization framework launched during former U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term.

Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi welcomed the decision, describing it as the start of a new strategic partnership. In a post on X, he called the recognition “a historic moment” and affirmed Somaliland’s readiness to join the Abraham Accords and normalize relations with Israel.

Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has since pursued international recognition as a top national priority — a goal President Abdullahi has emphasized since taking office last year.

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said the two sides have agreed to establish full diplomatic ties, including the exchange of ambassadors and the opening of embassies.

“I have instructed my ministry to act immediately to institutionalize relations between the two countries across a wide range of fields,” Saar said.

According to Netanyahu’s office, the prime minister has also invited President Abdullahi to visit Israel. The Somaliland leader, in turn, expressed his appreciation for what he called Netanyahu’s “historic declaration.”
